Yes the whole family is now settling in to their new life. Stephanie is currently trying to give Abbie her first meal at home. I would have had some updates last night except I stopped being able to get an internet connection at the hospital. I have no idea what happened, but whatever. And check out the gallery for more pictures.
So Stephanie came off the magnesium yesterday morning. She had been in bed for 52 hours straight, so it took some effort for her to get her land legs when finally stood up. She seemed to feel better and better as the day went on. And we were glad when Stephanie was able to finally take a shower after... let's just say a long time... However some chest pain and wheezing gave the doctor some concern. She got an EKG and an xray to see if they could find any major issues. Thankfully they didn't find any, but the tests were more precautionary than anything. There was talk of scheduling a cardiology appointment this morning as a further precaution. However as the team of Dr's worked through it all, the cardiology appt was found unnecessary.
Stephanie and Abbie also worked endlessly trying to perfect the art of breastfeeding. I had no idea that it is as much work to make it happen between mommy and baby. But with Stephanie and baby feeling more spry as the day wore on, the better they got at the whole process. And Abbie found her appetite last night around 0100 when she nursed a total of 90 minutes at a single feeding! She is now a big fan of the boob, like her daddy.
I am personally feeling the lack of sleep, though overall I rested OK. It will be nice to actually sleep in our bed tonight. I am getting a little more used to short stints of rest. Since it was likely our last night in the hospital, Stephanie decided to keep Abbie in the room with us for the first time. I will admit that I had a hard time falling asleep and was comforted when I could hear her make some sort of noise. I experienced the joke about parents wanting to poke their newborns at night to make sure they are OK. I probably slept best when I knew Stephanie was trying to feed her, even though I had to get up and down to try to help, along with changing several dirty diapers. And like I've heard before, it's not nearly as gross when it's your child.
So we are one happy family adjusting to life outside the controlled hospital environment. We are more than happy to show off our little bundle, but you may want to call first to make sure that we aren't pre-disposed with various baby activities. And don't be surprised if we're all asleep! What an amazing journey it has been so far.
